If you’re looking for a cool escape from the sun and want to learn more about the ocean environment, now is the perfect time to visit the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific.

SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel were invited to a reception at the aquarium this week honoring the film Heroes of the Coast, which documents the creation of the California Coastal Commission.

The aquarium was the perfect showcase for this powerful film and we got to see the amazing sea life and displays housed there. 

Everything from seals and sea lions…

colorful tropical fish…

jelly fish…

nautilus mollusks…

to huge lobsters and eels.

Walking past the enormous tanks and viewing areas is like being in another world.

You can visit the penguins and watch them play.

See a giant Pacific octopus that changes colors…

or check out the inhabitants of the 10,000 sq. ft. Shark Lagoon.

Exhibit panels, interactive touch-screens, crawl-in spaces, and more put you right in the middle of the underwater action.

Whether it’s listening to the sounds of whales or immersing yourself in the wonders of the ocean’s floor, far from any rays of light.

Viewing the exotic sea life we share this planet with and meeting the members of the California Coastal Commission reminded SurfWriter Girls Sunny and Patti of how important it is to safeguard our oceans and beaches.

We were glad that we could join Surfrider Foundation Huntington/Seal Beach Chapter Chairperson Tony Soriano and members of Surfrider’s Long Beach Chapter in showing our support for the Coastal Commission and the aquarium.  

The Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific, located at 100 Aquarium Way, is open Monday thru Sunday, from 9 am. – 6 p.m. General Admission tickets are: Adults - $25.95; Children - $14.95; Seniors - $22.95.

Foam E-Z’s 20th Year Party Rocks!

The Orange County surfing community came out in full force this week to celebrate the 20^th anniversary of Westminster-based Foam E-Z, the state-of-the-art surfboard materials warehouse.

On a perfect SoCal day people mingled in Foam E-Z’s patio…

and checked out the latest boards and surf gear on display at pop-up vendors’ stands…

enjoying hot dogs and hamburgers hot off the grill.

A surfboard art demonstration by Drew Brophy drew a big crowd.

Squeezing in to see the creative process up close, SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel watched the artist cover the board with his handiwork, using an array of colored pens to work his magic.  

Taking in the scene with his family, Foam E-Z’s owner Brad Nadell said, “Twenty years ago I never thought I’d be here. But, with a little bit of luck and perseverance, here I am.” 

As well-wishers stopped by to congratulate Nadell and share stories, the party atmosphere kicked into high gear with the Jimbonaires band keeping the music going... 

and lucky winners claiming raffle prizes…T-shirts, board-building supplies, blanks, fin sets, and more.

The SurfriderFoundation Huntington/Seal Beach Chapter was a winner, too, because the proceeds from the raffle went to the Chapter.

H/SB Chapter members enjoying the festivities included Chairperson Tony Soriano... 

Gilbert Castillon, John Griffith, and Val and Duke Aipa.

Castillon, a coffee entrepreneur who loves coffee almost as much as surfing, helped get the party perking with fresh-brewed samples of his own Java Jaws Surfers Blend Coffee. 

Aipa, President of Aipa Surf Co and son of legendary surfer and board shaper Ben Aipa, donated the surfboard that Brophy painted.

Cowabunga! It’s the one-year anniversary of the Orange County Breeze Magazine. It’s time to beat the bongo drums and strum the ukuleles!

Come join SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel in saluting the OC Breeze Magazine for all it does to bring communities, families and friends, local businesses and organizations together in Northwest Orange County.

With its unique voice and colorful, islands’ format, the magazine is dedicated to covering the stories that make a difference in people’s lives.

Whether its business and government, education, health, home and garden, or entertainment and sports, the OC Breeze Magazine covers it all.

Conceived and operated by Editor Shelley Henderson... 

and Advertising Director Guy Cariglio (the Big Kahuna)... 

the OC Breeze Magazine (print and online) was launched in June 2012.

Now it reaches 35,000 homes and businesses in Cypress, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Seal Beach, El Dorado Park Estates, College Park East and West, and the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base.  

 

 “Our big thing is building community, weaving and repairing the ties that bind us together,” says Henderson.

The recipient of an Orange County 2013 Woman of Distinction Award, Henderson is always on the look-out for a good story. “One of my biggest joys is going out to local businesses and then writing an article about them to share with our readers.”

Cariglio is a people-person and works closely with local businesses and organizations. “When it comes to advertising,” he says, “its purpose isn’t just to sell, but to build name recognition and branding.” He helps each business design specialized ads suited to its individual needs.   

Together, Henderson and Cariglio like to shine the spotlight on the people, activities, and events that make Orange County such a vibrant place to live and work. They strive for the “Wow!” factor – making the OC Breeze Magazine colorful and inviting.
