New Book is Doggone Good!

Open water swimmer extraordinaire Lynne Cox swam the English Channel twice before she was seventeen – setting speed records both times! As much at home in the water as on land, Cox’s swimming feats are legendary.

From swimming in the frigid waters of Antarctica and across the Strait of Magellan to around the Cape of Good Hope and across Lake Baikal in Siberia, Cox has amazed people. She even brought world superpowers America and the Soviet Union together when she swam the Bering Strait connecting the two countries on August 7, 1987.

 

As a motivational speaker and author, Cox continues to uplift and inspire adults and children alike, as she does now with her new book Tales of Al: The Water Rescue Dog. The story of another athlete, this one a member of the famed Italian School of Water Rescue Dogs, features a lovable – and seemingly untrainable – chocolate Newfoundland on her path to becoming a heroic, lifesaving rescue dog.

 

SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel have been admirers of Cox for a long time. She and Sunny both went to Los Alamitos High School in Orange County, CA. So, we weren’t surprised that Tales of Al, with its underdog super achiever, would have such a strong emotional impact and have us cheering.

Elizabeth, Queen of the Seas, illustrated by Caldecott Medal Winner Brian Floca, is a School Library Journal Best Children's Book of the Year. Set in Christchurch, New Zealand, it's the story of a whale seal named Elizabeth who likes to bask in the sun – in the middle of the town's two-lane road – far from where she should be in the open sea.

 

Based on a true story told to Cox by two children in the town, Cox brings it to life for the rest of us, recounting Elizabeth's incredible journey up the Avon River and her search for a place to call her own.

 

Grayson is the captivating bestseller of Cox's face-to-face encounter with a baby whale off the California coast when Cox was a teenager. Separated from its mother, the whale decides to follow Cox on her swim. But, if Cox can't find a way to reunite the missing mother and child, the baby whale could die.

 

Two tiny specks in the huge ocean swimming together while anxious bystanders watch from shore, it becomes an endurance test for both. And a question of if the mother whale will find them in time.

Cowabunga! The waves were sick at dawn patrol and it was jammed in the lineup. Aggros were snaking. But, with so many barrels I stayed chill and got into the Green Room without any headers.

Whoa! What language is this? Surfer slang, of course. Surferese.

If you're new to surfing or have surfer friends and family, then it's important to know the lingo...even if it seems like you're trying to crack the secrets of the Rosetta Stone or learn to speak Norwegian. 

Luckily, you probably already know more surferese than you think because of all the movies, books and media that use it.

Vans U.S. Open of Surfing Makes Big Splash

 

Huntington Beach Event Back in Full Swing

The Vans U.S. Open of Surfing, with title sponsor Vans on board again, is making a big splash as the summer's 2022 premiere surfing event, July 30 – August 7, at the Huntington Beach Pier, in the heart of Surf City, USA.

Returning to the surfing stage in a big way, event host Vans is pulling out all the stops. In addition to surfing, there's skateboarding and BMX competitions.

Plus, a giant retail center, vendors, entertainment, and more in its trademark "Festival on the Sand" in the Van Doren Village. Vans manager for Action Sports Marketing, Justin Vallano, says, "We are back in full swing.”

 

Steve Van Doren, son of Vans co-founder Paul Van Doren, is ready to rumble, too, firing up the grill to cook hamburgers and hot dogs for hungry fans on the beach from noon to 2 pm. 

 

The emphasis at the nine-day extravaganza is on surfing, fun and community.

As the 4th stop on the World Surf League Challenger Tour, the Open is bringing out the world's top surfers to compete for points, prestige, and the championship title. Forty of the best longboarders are hitting the HB beach, too, competing in the Vans Duct Tape Invitational as part of the Longboard Tour. 

Surf City, USA is excited to showcase everything that makes it special. Local restaurants, shops and the International Surfing Museum all have the welcome mat out.

And visitors can see surf history being made at the Surfing Walk of Fame and Surfers' Hall of Fame induction ceremonies on August 4th and 5th.  

This year marks the 25th anniversary for the Surfers' Hall of Fame, with surfer Peter Mel, surf explorer Martin Daly, and Sugar Shack Cafe owner Michele Turner the 2022 inductees.  

With so much to see and do at the Open, Surfrider Foundation members are on the scene in the information booth and sharing the stoke on all the action. 

And helping to keep the beach clean for all to enjoy!

Lessons in Chemistry, by Bonnie Garmus, combines science, rowing, and romance into one delectable treat centered around a popular 1960s TV cooking show, Supper at Six. Two Nights in Lisbon, by Chris Pavone, is a classic suspense thriller that keeps you wondering, guessing, and turning the pages while the clock ticks down on an explosive ending.
