Everyone’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day! And one of the traditional things to do – along with eating corned beef and cabbage – is to write a limerick.

A limerick is a funny, irreverent five-line poem in which the first, second and fifth lines rhyme and the third and fourth lines rhyme. Popularized in the 1800s, it gets its name from the County of Limerick in Ireland. Patrons in pubs often competed to create the best limericks while drinking whiskey and beer.

To put you in a festive mood SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel checked out what the Irish pubs in Seal Beach have planned for St. Patrick’s Day and wrote these beach limericks for you –

Surfer Dave
There once was a surfer named Dave,
Who went looking for the perfect wave.
But, just when he found a winner,
A whale ate him for dinner.
And Dave’s surfboard was all they could save.

Lotion Commotion
There was a young lady who went to the ocean.
She sat on the sand and put on her sun lotion.
But, her yellow bikini
Was incredibly teeny
And this caused a major commotion.

Fish Wish
There was this glittering, magical fish,
Who could grant you your own special wish.
When a fisherman found her
He asked the great flounder,
“For a pair of dry boots that don’t squish.”

Beulah’s Hula
There was a shapely lady named Beulah,
Who could really shake up the hula.
The men would all gather
And get into a lather
And Beulah would rake in the moola.

Surfer Girl
There once was a surfer girl named Jasmine.
Like a magnet, she attracted all the men.
When she went out to compete
In any surfing meets
It’s so crazy how she always would win.

Rude Dude
There once was an arrogant surfer dude,
Who would hog all the waves and act rude.
He’d steal waves away,
Keeping the angry surfers at bay,
Until they realigned his attitude.

Surfing Leprechaun
There once was a cool, surfing leprechaun,
Who amazed everyone with what he’d done.
He’d do toes on the nose,
Hang ten…and there he goes
With his mug of green beer having fun!

The perfect place to write your own limericks and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day is on Main Street in Seal Beach.

Among the Irish pubs waiting to welcome you are O’Malley’s, Hennessey’s Tavern, Clancy’s, and The Irisher – all within walking distance of each other.

O’Malley’s (140 Main Street) is holding a 3-day fest leading up to St. Pat’s Day with a special menu and Irish music performed by Mulligan’s Band.  On the big day itself, March 17, the pub is serving food all day. By the time the last green beer is poured, over 500 lbs. of corned beef and cabbage will have been served.  O’Malley’s owner Brian Kyle, who is eager to greet everyone, said, “Posted on the entrance door is CEAD MILE FAILTE,’which means 100,000 welcomes in Gaelic.’”

Hennessey’s (143 Main Street) will be open all day serving food, too. Along with its traditional St. Patrick’s Day menu, some of the items Hennessey’s is known for are its Irish Nachos, Beer Battered Onion Rings, Famous Tavern Fries, and Sea Salt and Vinegar Kettle Chips.

Clancy’s (111 Main Street) and The Irisher (121 Main Street) cater to locals looking for a pint and a game of pool or darts while the juke box plays. Both pubs have a laid back beach vibe, but on St. Patrick’s Day you can expect them to be elbow-to-elbow.

When you’re celebrating the wearing o’ the green and all things Irish, be sure to say a traditional Irish good luck toast.

Irish Good Luck Sayings

May good luck be your friend in whatever you do
And may trouble be always a stranger to you.

May you live as long as you want,
and never want as long as you live.

For each petal on the shamrock
This brings a wish your way -
Good health, good luck, and happiness
For today and every day.
