been scouting the best books to put in your beach bag.
Kook, by Peter Heller, shares what the newbie surfer learned about "love, life and catching the perfect wave." An Orange County Register Book Club selection, it tells how surfing instructor Michael Pless,The Saint of Seal Beach, taught Heller how to surf, launching him on a life-changing surfing journey. SurfWriter Girl Sunny spent a day with the duo and got her own surfing and life lessons.

Forty Thieves,
by Thomas Perry (a SurfWriter Girls favorite), is a fast-paced, comic caper
with husband-and-wife detectives squaring off against husband-and-wife
assassins. With murder, mayhem and Russian jewel thieves it's a volatile mix. Wall
St. Journal dubs it "a double-barreled Southern California thriller
that moves almost faster than a speeding bullet.”
Barbarian Days: A Surfing Life, by William Finnegan, gets rave reviews
from both the surfing and mainstream press. From boyhood days surfing in
California and Hawaii through a life of wave-chasing adventures in Polynesia,
Thailand and South Africa, it chronicles his passion for surfing and the people
he meets. "An epic adventure, beautifully told," says Dallas
Morning News.
Double Cup Love,
by Eddie Huang, Chef author of Fresh Off the Boat, blends family, food,
China, and a marriage proposal into one savory dish. Foodies and romantics will
want this on their reading menu. The Chicago Tribune says Huang is

The Games,
by James Patterson and Mark Sullivan, has security firm honcho Jack Morgan in
the middle of Rio's Olympic Games. Set against white sand beaches, Patterson

The Weekenders,
by Mary Kay Andrews, is a classic beach read. When Belle Isle vacationer Riley
