Surfrider Stitches A Quilt of Love
Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel
Surfers everywhere were feeling the love on Ohana Day – a
day that celebrates family and Mother Earth.
Surfing, beach cleanups, ocean education, picnics and
paddleboarding, art, music, and more.
It all came together under the sun.
Just like the squares of Surfrider member Nancy Hastings' quilt, which her mother-in-law Betty Hastings stitched together from 25 of Nancy's Surfrider T-shirts.
Just like the shoots of the taro plant, which come from a
common bulb and remind us of the Polynesian belief that we are all one family (ohana)
and must take care of each other and honor the land that nurtures us all.
Just like Lilo and Stitch, who discover they are a family –
a little girl and an alien from another galaxy, but family all the same.
So, Surfrider Foundation members from Seal Beach, CA to
points around the globe came together to honor each other and the oceans, waves
and beaches that bring so much joy.
Love and family – stronger than ever
on Ohana Day – stitched together into the fabric of life.
