Leaving No One Behind
Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel
Water is essential to life. More
valuable than gold or oil, it provides moisture and nutrients to man, animals
and plants.
On World Water Day, March
22nd, the United Nations is focusing on the universal need we all have for
water and the importance of making sure that clean water is available for
everyone.
This year's theme Leaving No one
Behind calls on the global community to take action to conserve and protect
the world's water supply and to ensure that it is available for drinking,
sanitation, and food production.
The U.N. Assembly states that every
human being should have "access to 50 to 100 liters of water per day that
is safe, acceptable and affordable."
Yet, despite the world's abundance
of resources, we have a long way to go in reaching this goal. SurfWriter Girls
Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel learned that currently 1.8 billion people don't
have access to uncontaminated water.
What's more, the average distance a
person in a developing country walks to fetch water is 3.75 miles. And a 5 gal.
jerrycan filled with water weighs 44 lbs.
To lessen this burden, it's critical
to conserve water and support those organizations that are working to get it
where it's needed...so that no one is left behind.
