You can’t have a bad time at Fred’s Mexican Café and Cantina in Huntington Beach (300 Pacific Coast Highway).
Perched above the corner of Main Street and PCH (upstairs from surf shop Huntington Surf and Sport), it’s a fun, friendly place with colorful décor and a Bohemian vibe.
Plus a killer view of the HB pier. Fred’s is the perfect place to watch the sunset and enjoy Happy Hour Margaritas.
SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel went to Fred’s on a Taco Tuesday when the tacos are $2. The price was right and we had four kinds to choose from – chicken, fish, calamari and carnitas. Not surprisingly, Fred’s was packed. But, it isn’t just the prices that bring people in.
Eating at Fred’s is a unique experience. Everywhere you look there is something interesting and different to see – cherubs mounted on the orange and turquoise walls and painted ceilings with angels looking down from above…

Fred’s is definitely a restaurant that doesn’t take itself too seriously. A quote painted overhead declares: “If I had my life to live over…I’d live over a bar.”
In addition to a full assortment of tacos, burritos, enchiladas, fajitas, and quesadillas, Fred’s has lots of other menu options, including sandwiches on torta rolls with chipotle mayonnaise, carne asada, char-broiled Chicken Monterey, and tortilla soup.
Sunny and Patti – Happy Hour
Fred’s own Surf City Salad combines mixed greens, tomato, avocado, red onion, roasted corn and mango, topped with tortilla chips, cotija cheese and a choice of grilled chicken breast, shrimp or pescado. And, for when you’re eating light, they even have “bikini size salads.”
Fred’s keeps its fresh baked tortilla chips red hot in its fiery kitchen.
Don’t worry that they’ve forgotten the desserts, though. The Chocolate Diablo is a devilishly rich, chocolate mousse brownie topped with whipped cream. And they have fresh made Churros to Go toasted in cinnamon and sugar. So, you can walk off the calories!
Before you leave, be sure to check out the rest rooms. SurfWriter Girls Sunny and Patti can’t comment on the Men’s Room, but the Ladies’ Room was a lavish sight to see with decorated walls, artwork and funny sayings covering every available space.
There’s no doubt that Fred’s Mexican Café and Cantina really rocks on Tuesdays. And, if you’re a dog lover, then stop by on Mondays. That’s when they hold Doggie Date Night – “a patio party for your pup.” You can dine on the patio and get a free doggie dinner with the purchase of an entrée.
Make no bones about it, Fred’s is a place you’ll want to visit more than once. And, with locations in SanDiego (Gas Lamp District, Old Town, and Pacific Beach), Laguna Niguel, and Hawaii, you’ll have lots of spots to choose from.

I have been to Fred's a couple of times and it has that beach feeling that a lot of restaurants seem to not get. Fred's has it down pat and keeps tourist and locals coming back for more. One thing I did learn was the Doggie Date Night. I am so taking my two dogs with me on that night for sure.
