The thermometer said it was only 50 degrees – freezing by Southern California standards – so SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel knew there was just one thing to do.

It was time to make Sunny’s Special Soup.

With the cold and flu season here, nothing warms you up on a chilly day when the marine layer is thick like homemade chicken soup…made with lots of onions and garlic.

Putting her own spin on this classic recipe, Sunny says her soup is quick and easy to make. “Just use whatever vegetables you like."

"What’s handy in the fridge.”

“After browning the chicken, when you pour in the chicken broth (32 oz.) and water (two cups) make sure to put some bay leaves in…for the flavor and the smell.”

Sunny’s secret ingredient is a mysterious bottle labeled: Bragg Liquid Aminos – an all-purpose seasoning mixture made from soy beans and purified water. If you have it on hand, a few squirts will do.

Other ingredients include: Italian Parsley, cilantro and lemon juice from a whole lemon.

“When the chicken is done, after about 25 minutes, I start putting in the veggies,” Sunny explains.

“Then let it all cook for 20 minutes or so.”

“After that, turn it off and add the lemon juice.”

Then you’re ready to eat.

Sourdough bread goes well with Sunny’s Special Soup. Or, try King’s Hawaiian Bread for a tropical twist.

This is a great dish to serve when friends come over. There’s always a lot to share!

After a morning or afternoon out surfing you’ve got yourself a hearty and healthy meal.
