Beach Books that Sizzle
Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel
What can be better than lying on the
beach with a cool drink and a hot beach book? It's the perfect escape.
If you're looking for adventure,
action or romance, SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel have loaded
our beach bag with just the books for you. In keeping with the nine parts
of speech - from nouns to verbs - these nine books show the power of words when
writers put them together in stories to excite and thrill.
Go Set a Watchman, by Harper Lee, is the most talked about book in the
publishing industry now. Based on the recently discovered
"lost" manuscript by the renowned author of To Kill a
Mockingbird, this book picks up that story 20 years later. With a July 14
publishing date and 2 million copies print run, it's already sizzling.
Finders Keepers, by horror-master Stephen King, is definitely one to read
on a bright, summer day when there are lots of people around. A sequel to
Mr. Mercedes, it's about a boy who finds notebooks and money stolen from a
famous author at the same time that the thieves are getting out of prison.
Killing Monica, by Candace Bushnell of Sex and the City fame, offers
more of the same in this story about a writer who is overshadowed by
her fictional character.
Truth or Die, by thriller writer James Patterson and Howard
Roughan, keeps the action going when an attorney discovers a secret that
terrorists will kill to get their hands on. With 24 #1 Bestsellers already,
this is likely to make it #25 for Patterson.
The Girl on the Train, by first-time novelist Paula Hawkins, is picking up lots
of movie buzz about who will play the title role in this murder mystery
that starts with something glimpsed from a train window. Currently #1 on the
Bestseller list, SurfWriter Girl Patti couldn't put
it down.
X, by alphabet-series mystery writer Sue Grafton,
has P.I. Kinsey Milhorne chasing a serial killer. From her first
novel, A is for Alibi, to her latest Grafton has a way with letters that
keeps readers turning the pages.
Orient, by Christopher Bollen, builds suspense and a
body count in a sleepy Long Island beach town that isn't quite what it seems.
It's definitely not a beach you'd want to go to, but one that draws
readers in.
Beach Town, by Mary Kay Andrews, is set in a beach town, too - the
one in movie scout Greer Hennessy's sights as the perfect location for her
latest movie. The Florida town offers more than she expects,
including a mix of romance and environmentalism.
Kona Heat, by Gregory and Patricia Kishel (SurfWriter Girl Patti), is a romantic/thriller set on Hawaii's Big Island. Winner of Reader View's Best Regional Fiction award, the novel pits science and superstition in a dangerous battle over a geothermal plant, leading to a fiery climax in the heart of the Kilauea Volcano.
So, what's in your beach bag or backpack?
